I guess this pertains to the previous post. I guess its a little repetitive but I found it interesting. Just thought I would share.

The hardest song to write, Folds says, was "Late," a song about singer-songwriter Elliot Smith, who died on October 21, 2003. "I toured with Elliot and knew him a little bit. His music was absolutely inspiring to me in every way. When I thought I wanted to quit music or quit anything, I found his music uplifting and reassuring. On top of that, he was a good guy. Trying to get that across in a song in a humble way without being cliché is a dodgy proposition."

The prospect of failing terrified Folds and kept him in knots for three days trying to write lyrics that would convey his sadness at losing Smith and his happiness for having known him only for a while. "I wanted to write about the Elliott Smith that I saw on tour, who seemed shy and fragile one minute then playing super aggressive basketball the next, whose music got me through some hard times," Folds says. "and when I felt bad about playing some gross club with profanity scrawled all over the ceiling, I knew Elliot was out there somewhere making beautiful music in the middle of the same kind of stink. Poets are inspired because they look up at the same sky that Wordsworth used to look at. I was inspired because I looked up at the same starscape of 'Dookie,' 'Nirvana Sux' and 'Eat Me' that Elliott used to look up at. Hopefully people will hear the song and five more people will go out and buy his records or think about what he meant. If it keeps him alive for another few minutes, then I accomplished what I wanted to do."

Hey, if any of you like Ben Folds at all, you should check out the song "Late", because it's a tribute to Elliott Smith. And if anybody wants me to send it to you, feel free to IM me. My screen name is SarahRefvem

These are the lyrics...Collapse )

lightly related to Elliott:
does anyone have any quasi cds?
I have featuring birds and the sword of God and I'm willing to trade
quasi just isn't too popular around where I live and I can't buy it via online because I don't have a credit card and limewire doesn't' have it

any help would be appreciated

A tad depressing. [29 Mar 2005|10:19am]

asilentmovie
I was just reading some of the posts on sweet addy as of late, and some of the posts in this group, and I got to thinking.

I find it kind of disappointing, sad, that everywhere you look, Elliott is being talked about in the past tense. He was a good man. Every new t-shirt everyone is making has his birth and death date. It feels like we're grasping the fact that he's dead a little too much. I'm not debating that he's not, but it just feels unfortunate, it's sad.

I really wish things were back the way there were before he was dead, because now every discussion about him, every homage, everywhere you look you have to be reminded that he's gone. As far as I'm concerned he 'was' not a good man, he 'is' a good man. He will always be a good man, whether or not he's still spreading the good.

I'm not trying to be like every little whiney emo kid who is still crying every day about him being gone and writing letters to him and all that. I'm way past that. We all should be. I miss him, we all miss him. But it's important to push forward and think about him as if he never left, you know? For everyone's sake.

With love,
Matt

elliottt and jon brionnn [17 Mar 2005|10:53am]

markinthestudio
I havent had the time to download it yet... but aparently elliott is playing with jon brion at this show: "Jon Brion at Largo, 11-3-00"

"Say yes" is involved in some way.

If you haven't had a chance to hear jon yet, this is a good time to go for it. He's brilliant.

here's the link:

NOTE: The server is either really slow, or the files are high quality. So it's taking forever. I'll let you know in a few hours when it's done downloading the show.

Hmm, I never post here. I just posted these at the other community a few minutes ago (seems like community enemies now or something..). I don't know what's going on lately between the both but whatever. I thought I'd post some things I've done since I've been taking pictures of all the shirts I've done, plus the necklace I made recently...

The shirt and necklaceCollapse )

Peace.

My first post. [16 Mar 2005|12:22pm]

I just joined this community today.

This place seems so much calmer and more mature than the other "elliotsmith" community.

People in the other community are so competitive and almost always at each others throats sometimes it's sad.
For instance they're actually fighting over the way his name was spelled on his suicide note.
Was it the coroners office error or was it Elliott Smiths error?
I feel like they're missing the point. They're forgetting why they joined.
The facts are irrelevant because unfortunately, it doesn't change the fact he's dead.
I think it's primarily because the community mainly consists of 14-18 year old high school students.

I don't know I don't get it. I like this community so far from what I read.

I don't really like the behavior in the other community and I hope you guys are more welcoming.

I know I'm late [16 Mar 2005|08:47am]

fancygernal
by a day, but since it was the "ides" of march and all. (I know it's not about the ides of march, I'm trying to be cute).

everything is exactly right
when i walk around here drunk every night
with an open container from 7-11
in st. ides heaven
i've been out haunting the neighborhood
and everybody can see i'm no good
when i'm walking out between parked cars
with my head full of stars
high on amphetamines
the moon is a lightbulb breaking
it'll go around with anyone
but it won't come down for anyone
you think you know what brings me down
that i want those things you could never allow
you see me smiling you think it's a frown
turned upside down
cos everyone is a fucking pro
and they all got answers from trouble they've known
and they all got to say what you should and shouldn't do
though they don't have a clue
high on amphetamines
the moon is a lightbulb breaking
it'll go around with anyone
but it won't come down for anyone
and i won't come down for anyone

I'm just stopping by to say that I had to leave the other elliott community AKA elliottsmith for numerous reasons.  I'm glad I still have this community though.  The people are way more mature here, and they don't turn everything into an information competition.
I'm just basically saying that I'm glad to be a part of this community still.

I've come to find that I enjoy this community far more than others that I've seen about Elliott.
Here there aren't repetitive posts about the same questions over and over again,
there aren't many superficial fans that just like him because it's "cool."
This community just seems more relaxed, you guys don't seem to feel the urge to post how much you love his music/him every day, which is nice.
We know Elliott's music is amazing, but it seems that in other places you see this all of the time:
"OMG I TOTALLY LUV ELLIOT HE'S AWESOME! I WISH HE WASN'T DEAD, THOUGH! <3 ELLIOT <3"

Call me a bit touchy, but that makes me want to vomit.
Just a little.

But you guys post reasonable things, things that are useful and relevant.

So in conclusion, I would just like to say thank you.
Thank you all for not shitting on something that is so beautiful and personal.
I appreciate it.

A guy named Crobin from the Sweetaddy boards made a video for King's Crossing. And, well, it's quite amazing. So watch it? And enjoy.
